Titled PAINTINGS ON THE SYMPHONIES & QUARTETS OF DIMITRI SHOSTAKOVICH, this A4 photocopied artist’s statement by Aubrey Williams, was made to accompany an exhibition by him. The statement is dated May 1981. The statement was valuable in that it directly presented Williams’ own words and thoughts. From the statement:
“Over the years of producing these paintings I have been asked the question with increasing regularity - Shostakovich?
To me, this is like asking Dimitri Shostakovich why he used themes from Shakespeare, Lorca, Michaelangelo, Rilke, Burns, Apollinaire etc., in the production of his inspired music.
On hearing the finale of Shostakovich’s First Symphony 35 years ago, I realised a sonic connection with a new well-spring of this state of human consciousness we call ART, and I have been involved with this music with an intensity that has grown over the years ever since that time.”
