“Luc Tuymans’ subjects are figurative but not easily deciphered. Even though titles can serve to identify what is portrayed, they only hint at a possible interpretation of the picture’s statement. Like a memory, the paintings seem to be out of reach. Though most of the paintings have a private character, Tuymans refers to historical events and occurrences belonging to the collective memory, which to this day still seem to disturb us. Using these themes, it is possible for Tuymans to interpret a historical fact through an artwork. At the beginning of the 1980s, Luc Tuymans first began producing films; then he recognized painting as a chance to allow a theme to simultaneously appear and dissolve: ‘the small gap between the explanation of a painting and the painting itself provides the only possible perspective of painting’. To this day, Tuymans’ painting is marked by his exploration of the moving picture. But unlike film, the painted image - a condensation - refers to a more comprehensive content. ‘Every image is incomplete, just as every memory is.’”
