”In her performances and installations, Tania Bruguera often uses silence and self-censorship as an act of submission, yet simultaneously transforms it into a mode of resistance. Thus Bruguera’s Cuban origin is fundamental to her work; having grown up in a country continuously subjugated to diverse powers, in silently resisting, Cuba has indeed preserved its distinct social identity. In Untitled (2000), Bruguera turned a former jail in Havana into a pitch-dark space, and by covering the floor with sugarcane immediately disrupted one’s sense of sight, balance, and smell.”
