For years before his death, London’s October Gallery emerged as a committed advocate for Aubrey Williams’ work. This advocacy and commitment has continued in the decades following the Guyana-born artist’s death in 1990. Typical in this regard was the exhibition of Williams’ “Cosmos” series, held at October Gallery 14 December 1995 - 27 January 1996. This press release for the exhibition included a quote from Denis Bowen. “Acclaimed in his native Guyana, and with many exhibitions in Europe, the Americas and Japan to his credit, , (sic) Aubrey Williams joins the poets and writers from his country whose work has become part of the British cultural landscape. He is an artist who bridges race, cultures and religions.” Denis Bowen, London, 1989.

From the press release, “Born in Guyana in 1929, Williams became as deeply impressed by the customs of Warrau Indians as by the symphonies of Shostakovich, as enthusuiastic of the natural beauty of exotic birds as of the sophisticated power of colour to evoke sound, or sound colour. In his work he has addressed the questions that many of the great artists of our century have asked: how to absorb the past in the present; how to invoke through the abstract power of art a visual experience of reality.”
