Born, 1956 in Bethnal Green, London
Paul Gilroy has held a number of important academic posts within presigious institutions in the USA and UK. These include Professor of African American Studies at Yale University, Lecturer of Sociology at Goldsmiths College, University of London. He curently holds a position at the London School of Economics. He has written numerous texts and essays on race, sociology and visual culture. One of his most celebrated publications is There Ain’t No Black in the Union Jack , Routledge, 1987. He was also responsible for Small Acts: Thoughts on the Politics of Black Cultures, Serpent’s Tail, 1994 (the cover of which featured a montage by Sonia Boyce), Against Race: Imagining Political Culture beyond the Color Line, Belknap Press, 2000, and Postcolonial Melancholia (The Wellek Library Lectures), Columbia University Press, 2004. Paul Gilroy contributed an essay to the catalogue for Back to Black (Whitechapel/The New Art Gallery Walsall) 2005.
