Manuel Mendive

Born, 1944 in Cuba

From the publication, In Black and White: Prints from Africa and the Diaspora, by Gill Saunders and Zoe Whitley, V&A Publishing, 2013: “This arresting scene, printed in vivid colours, was made three years after Cuban painter Manuel Mendive’s first trip to West Africa. His singular style incorporates both African and Western traditions, just as the Afro-Cuban religion of Santeria brings together the Roman Catholicism of Spanish plantation owners and the West African traditions of plantation slaves.”
