Georges Liautaud

“it was [in Croix des Bouquets] that [Liautaud] received his primary education and studied mechanics. Later, he took up the blacksmith’s trade and, over the years, he hammerered out at his forge agricultural implements, branding irons, and crossses for the cemetary of his native village. In 1953 these crosses came to the attention of the late DeWitt Peters, who encouraged Liautaud to create works of a purely artistic nature. Liautaud works in a difficult medium, but one that comes naturally to him. He flattens out steel oil drums and, working from precise, engineer-like drawings, chisels out the figures. Sculptures by Liautaud are in the Museum of Modern Art of New York, the modern museums of Paris and Rotterdam, as well as many other public and private collections. His works have been exhibited widely in this country and in Latin America and Europe, in one-man and group shows.”
